In about November 1915 granddad and two other coal baggers (one of Granddad's jobs was to deliver coal that he picked up at Canal wharf at Bury Bridge) were returning to Ainsworth and at bottom of t'hieght (as we say) near the Rose & Crown pub there was ice on the stone sets and the horses couldn't get a grip so the three of them decided to walk the horses and carts up on the cinder covered footpad (foot path).
They were coming down to the "Slack o ' Moor" cottage across from Green' s Lane and the local copper jumped out on them, nabbed and booked them, for twas a crime to walk horses on footpads. So granddad and colleagues duly appeared before the 'beaks'/magistrates in Bury and were fined 10/- which as Uncle Tom said was a lot o money in those days. However the magistrates also asked granddad why he wasn't in the army and granddad said that he hadn't received his call up papers yet. To which Uncle Tom said "He soon did" circa Nov 1915 at Fined 10/-.
